FIBROMYALGIA NEWS

UPDATE Nov. 1, 2004

Xyrem (Sodium oxybate), a medicine currently improved for the sleep disorder, narcolepsy, was found to help fibromyalgia pain and fibromyalgia-related fatigue in two double blind studies published in the Journal of Rheumatology (1,2). A large double-blind study of Xyrem for fibromyalgia is currently in process.

Our office has recently joined the Xyrem double-blind study.

Participants must be non-pregnant, not nursing, 18 years of age or older, have a diagnosis of fibromyalgia and otherwise be in good health.

This 3 month, 7 visit study includes four overnight sleep studies. Qualified participants will receive study medication, study related physical exams and laboratory tests at no charge as well as reimbursement for time and travel expenses. The total possible compensation for a full participant would be $1,290.

The study requires that we taper patients off anti-depressant, anti-seizure and hypnotic class medicines. Therefore, patients entering the study should be at a mild enough stage for this to be practical. Over-the-counter pain relief medicines may be used.

If you are from New Jersey or New York and would like more information about the study, please call Wendy King, R.N., Ph.D, or Beverly Licata, R.N. at 908-273-7770.

Or contact Orphan Medical, Inc. Telephone: 1-800-888-8orphan or 952-513-6903  to find participating clinical trial sites.
